Storyboards I did for Netflix’s America the Motion Picture.
For this scene, I had to transform Martha from a British peep back to her old self. I remember thinking, what’re some US symbols that people would recognize..? Then I thought about the image of Lady Columbia that was so prominent during the Civil War and WW1 era. But I thought not a lot of people would know that- then boom I said Lady Liberty! That’s recognizable!
As for the transformation scene, I thought about George Washington’s chair he sat at during the Constitutional Convention where Ben Franklin commented a carving of the sun on his chair, “I have often looked at that picture behind the President without being able to tell whether it was rising or setting. But now at length I have the happiness to know that it is a rising and not a setting sun.” And that got me inspired to have the sun beams going through her body that transforms her into Lady Liberty.
